Born in South Korea, Ji-Young’s passion in art began as a child. Her interest in European paintings led her to an art school where she did her studies and graduated specialising in European arts. In 1992, she started her own art workshop where she gave classes.
During a sabbatical trip in Europe in 1996, she found inspiration in the masterpieces in the museums prompting her decision to turn art into her profession. Settling down in Annecy to be closer to the alps, she continued her studies at L’Ecole Supérieure d’Art Annecy Alpes (ESAAA) and subsequently, at Genève Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design (HEAD) graduating with a post-grad.
Until 2010, Ji-Young’s work was primarily focused on photography and videography. A trip back to her hometown in South Korea in 2012 influenced her to draw and paint again. With the desire to convey her emotions without “filter” she began to create a series of travel sketchbooks and paintings.
“My pencils and paintbrushes allow me to express myself in the most spontaneous, original and sincere way”
Ji-Young’s preference to work with the “wash” technique entitled her to a vast palette of shades to capture the different intensities of colours that can be found in nature. Her choices of tools such as; calame (bamboo dip pen) lets her produce emotive stroke of great variety and power for drawings. Twigs, leaves and moss has also been used in her artwork when working outdoors.
Being deeply interested in nature, a recurring theme in her artwork, she encounters infinite source of inspiration. While blending her Asian origins with the culture of her adopted country enable her to characterise her work.
